Grampian Police are appealing for information in relation to poisoned baits being found on Sluie Estate near Banchory. The baits including two rabbits and one pigeon were found in woodland on the estate on 2nd May 2008 along with two dead Buzzards.

Analysis of these items by SASA, Edinburgh identified the banned substance carbofuran. A joint enquiry took place on the estate today by staff from Grampian Police, SGRPID and RSPB Scotland which involved a search of the estate and enquiry with the land manager and an employee. No illegal pesticides were recovered following the search.

Force Wildlife Crime Officer David MacKinnon said "I am appealing for any information from the public particularly in the Deeside area who may have information as to who was responsible for placing these poisoned baits on the estate. This is obviously a crime and is being investigated by our unit. I am keeping an open mind with the enquiry and fully aware that there is public access to the estate. During the enquiry we had full co-operation from those spoken to. The two dead Buzzards may or may not be connected to the poisoned baits but were located nearby. No poison showed up on their bodies, but they may be due to the fact they were so badly decomposed."

Grampian Police can be contacted on 0845 6005700.
