A young girl’s pet rabbit has been found decapitated with its heart torn out, the RSPCA said today.

The remains of the white and grey dwarf were discovered by the girl’s horrified mother at her home in Pentwyn, Cardiff.

A vet who examined the rabbit’s body believes someone killed the rabbit by hand - ripping off its head before taking out its heart.

An RSPCA spokesman said: “In his opinion, the heart had been removed with considerable skill and must have been the work of a person [not an animal].”

The rabbit’s hutch and run were found strewn across the garden, with its head and heart placed next to its corpse.

RSPCA Inspector Nichola Johnson said: “This is the most disturbing incident I have ever come across.

“To destroy an animal with such calculating cruelty beggars belief and I’d urge all animal owners in Pentwyn to be vigilant and report any suspicious incidents to the RSPCA or the police.”

The girl’s mother does not wish to be identified as her daughter does not yet know how her pet rabbit died.

The woman, who made the gruesome discovery at 7am on August 19, was said to be too upset to comment on the attack.
