A pony had to be destroyed after it was brutally assaulted. The animal was one of a number in a field off London Road in Shipston-on-stour, Warwickshire. Between 2pm and 4pm last Wednesday (March 5) it was subjected to what police have called a horrific attack.

The animal was discovered lying in a distressed state. A vet was immediately called but the pony's injuries were so severe it had to be put down. No other animals were hurt. Police are urgently appealing for information.

Inspector Patrick Devereux, who is based at Stratford, said: "This incident is horrific beyond comprehension and I am very anxious to hear from anyone with information which will help us find those responsible. I urge anyone who was in London Road on Wednesday between 2pm and 4pm and may have seen any suspicious people or vehicles to contact us as soon as possible."

Anyone with information is asked to contact either Shipston or Stratford police station on 01926 415000. Alternatively they can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

A reward is on offer through Crimestoppers for information which leads to the arrest, and charging, of one or more people.
